We were grateful that the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy were able to host us for our bi annual study day, and assessment for potential NF judges. The morning started with a powerpoint presentation on the importance of type in our breed. Our President and NF Agister Robert Maton gave an interesting overview of the forestrun ponies looking at the terrain and conditions in which they live, and the importance therefore of good feet, limbs, depth and a strong jawline. Robert also spoke about the schemes that are run which encourage a good standard of pony, and the bloodline, futurity and stallion schemes. Gill Wright reminded us of the history of the New Forest pony, and further discussed good type as well as looking at conformation faults with a variety of slides to illustrate her points.
This was followed by a practical session with a number of ponies that take part in different disciplines but again looking at type. This mix of ponies also encouraged some interesting discussion points-one being how much trimming is allowed bearing in mind some of our ponies compete in dressage at a high level and are regularly plaited therefore in need of a mane that has been pulled more than some other natives would permit. The morning finished with former Breed Show supreme champion Hollybrooke Melitta joining us – an example of the type that we should all aspire to.
Lunch was provided by Hels Kitchen before the afternoon assessment for the candidates wishing to join the probationary panel
The society thanks everybody that helped make the day a success especially the pony owners who brought their ponies along for the morning or afternoon session -without them we would not be able to run such an informative day.
