BREED SHOW - 23rd-25th August 2008 In-Hand Day Report

The quality of forest bred ponies was apparent on Monday when Hollyhatch Legacy a forest bred 2yo by Buckland Dragon Slayer out of East Boldre Swan Song, bred by Kate Ingram and owned by Mel Bridget scooped the overall youngstock championship ahead of a ring full of strong entries. Interestingly this is the second year running a forest bred pony has won this title proving the strength of type of forest bred ponies. Hollyhatch Legacy also took the Forest bred Youngstock Championship to the delight of Mel’s daughter Aimee showing her for her mother.

It was a family affair in the Forest Bred Championship, Brock Brocade a bay 13 year old mare by Yewtree Iceman owned and bred by Miss T Nineham and Mr J Young. Brock Halloween was Reserve, bred by James but owned by James’s brother Simon.

Luke Blomfield from Sway was delighted to win the Gaza Cup, for the best young commoner with his own  Sway Supreme Lady beating Lovelyhill High exchange into reserve.

The Mare classes were full of seasoned broodmares and Julia Woods had a long run of mare and foal classes to judge. Longwater Brook owned and bred by Jane Pothecary took the open broodmare small class with last years supreme of the show Ashley Coriander winning the large section, owned by Miss E Collis who later collected the overall mare Championship.

In the foal championship it was interesting that Ms Woods did not choose foals from some of the winning mares, instead she judged it as a separate class both colts and fillies. Her eventual champion was Waltersgay Rhythm a chestnut filly foal by Longcopse Elton out of Glenbeech Cyrstal owned and bred by  Misses Williams and Nash. Reserve was Picket Post Precious a bay colt owned by Mrs R Gray and ably shown by her grand daughter Abbie.

There was a cheer from the Green Cottage Stud supporters  when Fijal Jupiter, the Stallion Championship winner from Saturday was awarded overall Supreme of the show ahead of Sabinas Gold Sovereign. Jupiter is by Green Cottage Ambassador an Olympia qualifier in 2006 out of the illustrious mare Fijal Prelude herself a Supreme Champion in 1990,91,92 & 95. Jupiter was bred by Barbara Stiles but is now owned by Fiona King who hopes  Jupiter will follows in his parents winning footsteps and that of his famous grand sire Peveril Peterborough whom Fiona used to ride before his retirement, forming an unbeatable combination.
